Stepping into the world of sewing is more than just a new hobby for me. It’s feeling more empowered by what I choose to wear. Because now, I’m learning to make garments exactly to my preferences and needs. And you know I am going to do myself right.

I also just love to learn new things. Sewing feels like the “cream of the crop” hobby for me. I have a few favorite designers I’ve loosely followed over the years. I’m drawn to the same looks time and again. I realize that a lot of what I’ve been doing so far in crochet and knitting was just a way to feel closer to customizing my own clothes.

It’s really the technical aspect of garment making that makes me excited. “If I can get this measurement or that cinch just right, I might actually be able to wear this and rock it!” I’m constantly learning new ways to sew better, and I’m constantly learning new ways to look at my clothes differently. They really can be whatever you want them to be. Which can be both daunting and incredibly exciting.

So, I love observing designers who have made careers out of seeing the world differently via clothes. I love how they reinvent lines, play with patterns, and mix their textures. I love how a collection comes to life from the initial sketches that may be nowhere near like their original drawings. Or sometimes, it turns out exactly as how the designer envisioned it. I just love the whole darn process.

I am so inspired by them as I go through my own sewing journey. I wanted to share with you designers so far who have caught my attention this summer.

John Galliano

He redefines silhouette lines from his latest collection, The Maison Margiela 2024 Artisanal Collection. And I’m absolutely blown away from the storytelling in this show.

From the mood, the makeup, to the disheveled rag doll walk – it’s all so amazing and I’ve never seen anything like it.

Michel&Amazonka

Who can forget to mention the viral fashion post from the summer 2024 Olympics? Team Mongolia’s uniforms really shined among other outfits during the Olympics Opening Ceremony, and there’s a good reason for it.

Craftsmanship really does show. I just love the attention to detail for the embroidery around the collars and cuffs. As it turns out, that workmanship shows in their other designs as well. The pops of color and play with different textures are so refreshing.

Amy Powney

Speaking of, good quality goes hand in hand with good craftsmanship. On my journey, I’ve learned a lot more than I anticipated about sustainability in the fashion industry. I learned that one garment can be passed around many different countries before it makes into your hands. The fabric quality also matters.

Amy’s No Frills collection leaves no gaps in the supply chain. Being both fully sustainable in production and being elegant is impressive. I love how the sleeves are redefined with almost a shell-like ruffle at the arms. The pearls add a touch of elegance.

These are just a few designers who are catching my imagination. I’m sure there will be more in the future.

Till next time, xo.
